Gaelic Games November 7.2009 - EditNovember 7, 2009
Tom Sheehy, the organizer for Gaelic Games Association, showed our ambassadors how to play Gaelic Football and Hurling.
Each ambassador learned the basics of Football, where a ball that looks like a volleyball is used.
Some of the basic included, running with the ball for three seconds, and then bouncing the ball. The next step is to hit the ball to another team member, so as you are passing them, you can hit it to them. This could be a short or a long pass. Kicking the ball was then added to pass the ball a longer distance.
Our team was broken into two. We then practiced kicking the ball across the river to the ship on the other side. Each ship was to make sure they did not drop the ball, or the ship across the river would get points. Each side did an admiral job kicking and catching the ball.
Hurling was really interesting. A paddle is used, and many new skills were learned. Picking up the ball without touching it was an amazing feat. You roll the ball with the paddle on top, and then you push the paddle underneath the ball to have it roll up on the paddle. You run with the ball on the paddle, trying to keep it balanced. Another skill is to hit the ball with the paddle and have it go a long distance. It would be interesting to see this game in play.
The ambassadors learned a lot of new skills today. Some parents also participated, and all learned about these new games.
We then spent time eating ethnic foods like: Irish Soda Bread, English Scones, and Scottish Shortbread cookies.
The weather cooperated, and we had a wonderful experience out of doors.
